The 3D Touch is a magnetic range sensor with a coil and a freely moving probe pin.
At the beginning of calibration, the coil releases the probe. Gravity lowers the pin until it rests on the printer bed.
As the printer moves during calibration, the pin slides freely up and down inside the sensor, almost like a floating buoy following the surface of the bed.
A small magnet is attached to the moving pin. The integrated magnetic sensor detects its position and sends the bed position back to the printer controller for calibration.
When calibration is finished, the coil pulls the pin back into the sensor.
