I found this LCD on the street with a failed backlight, so why not take it apart and make it transparent?
I removed the backlight, reflector, light guide and diffuser layers from behind the LCD panel. With those parts removed, light could pass through the screen from behind and the image remained visible.
I also soaked the panel with distilled water to remove the antiglare layer. My main conclusion from the experiment is that removing this layer was unnecessary and probably not worth the time or risk. The transparent effect works without removing it.
I tested the panel against a window and later added LEDs around the screen for illumination.
No replacement parts were used.
